Treatment of heartworm for cats
***It is commonly referred to as cat heartworm. Heartworms are spread in cats through mosquitoes that carry cat heartworm larvae. The severity of heartworms in cats depends directly on the number of worms that provide the cat's body, the duration of incubation, and the response of the infected cat.
.The way heartworm disease affects cats is different from dogs. What happens is that it is a kind of final stage disease of the cat instead of actually becoming a worm in the heart, and it creates some chronic and permanent changes in the lung very large.
Diagnosis of heartworm for cats :
*There is no single standard used throughout the veterinary industry to diagnose heartworm for cats. Instead, our veterinarians use a battery of laboratory tests to determine the diagnosis of cat heartworm. These tests include:
*.Inlet Paul, or test the cat's urine.
*. A cardiac antigen test determines the presence of adult female heartworms. This is more specific than antibody testing, but not accurate in all cases.
*. A cardiac antibody test determines whether the cat's immune system has been exposed to heart attacks. This is a very sensitive test and is usually used first.
*. Ultrasound allows us to view the internal structures of the surrounding heart and vessels, to assess the condition and function of the heart. However, in some cats with low levels of cat heartworms, this test does not always yield accurate results.
*. Radiation imaging, or X-rays, that allow us to view the size and shape of the cat's heart. This is useful because many cats with cat heartworm develop enlarged pulmonary arteries, or have obstructions in the arteries leading to the lungs.
--The number of white blood cells in cats suspected of heartworms can be measured. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that occurs in greater numbers when the cat's heartworm is present, but can also indicate the presence of other parasites besides the cat heartworm.
As most pet owners already know, the heartworm treatment for cats and dogs is not the same. Under no circumstances should a cat worm be given a cat designed for a dog - or vice versa. Although you may have dogs and cats, you should always give them medicine designed for their species.
No matter how you look at it, treating heartworm is not easy. Your goal is to get rid of cardiac worms, although there are many factors that you should consider. The first thing you need to do is take your cat to the vet, where you will be able to perform tests to determine how many hearts worms your pet has. It can also tell how worms affect your cat and whether your cat can handle any side effects that the treatment medication may have.
Cardiac worms are a very serious condition, where worms will feed in vital areas around your cat's heart. Treatment can also be dangerous, especially if something goes wrong. Veterinarians are trained to deal with heartworms, in both cats and dogs. Although you may be able to buy a therapeutic drug at your local store, you should always consult your veterinarian before giving anything to your pet.
Treating your cat with heartworms may not be a cure at all, as it is extremely difficult to treat cats. Dead worms also have side effects, often causing more than a third of cats treated with serious problems. Deadly worms can turn into heart arteries, which are already inflamed by the presence of worms there. When the decaying worm begins to decompose, it can lead to very serious problems. Pets with a serious heart attack may need to spend time in the hospital to ensure they are treated properly.
Some cats may not be able to take a certain type of heartworm treatment drug. Depending on the side of the drug and how it affects the cat, some strains may not be able to take some of the best medications. To determine the best treatment options for your cat, your veterinarian will need to perform many tests. Once the tests are over, your veterinarian will be able to tell you the best treatment options available.
With all diseases, prevention is better and safer than treatment. Be sure to talk to your veterinarian and find out what heartworm prevention medication is best for use. A veterinarian can tell you what you need and how to use it. This way, you can prevent your pet from developing heartworms - serious side effects and life-threatening issues that accompany them.
**Do you have a veterinarian examining your cat for heartworm on your next appointment.
We recommend that you make an appointment to discuss the prevention of the cat's heartworm before the cat contracts with the heartworm. If you are experiencing any symptoms that may be indicative of cat heartworm disease, please contact a veterinarian immediately to make an appointment.
